I strongly suspect this book originally had the prologue it desperately needed. I believe the publisher (or Wendy Webb's editor) was one of those "I hate prologues" people and removed it. Because this fantastic book, balancing on the razor's edge of the real world and the magic world, needed a prologue to establish what kind of book we were dealing with here. Without that prologue, the revelation of Mercy's fate felt strangely out of place, like it was switching genres all of a sudden. Other than that, I loved it. Though I have to say, I wouldn't have been as patient as Grace was with all the people who had felt justified in keeping such important secrets from me. I wouldn't have been okay with it at all.
